How Rahul Dev Burman got the nick name Pancham

Rahul Dev Burman or R.D. Burman a music legend rejunevated the world with tornado of energy in his music.

Born on June 27, 1939 at Kolkata, R.D.Burman had music in his blood as his father was a great music director Sachin Dev Burman who composed several melodius music and also was a great singer.

Rahul Dev Burman in the film industry was popularly known as Pancham Da. Hardly anyone called him Rahul or Rahul Dev Burman but Pancham da was the name by which he was known and recognized worldwide.

Pancham Da started his musical career from the film offered by Mehmood named Chote Nawab in 1961 and the first sond was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The very first film marked the reconciliation between S D Burman and Lata Mangeshkar and they both stopped working with each other for almost 6 years.

The major break was given by Vijay Anand for Teesri Manzil and most of the songs were super hit. The film Sona re sona was humming in the air for long period and even today it pleases the mind. Initially actor Shammi Kapoor was reluctant and adviced Vijay Anand to stick to the well established and pair Shanker Jaikishan who gave several hits with Shammi kapoor. After Teesri manzil Pancham da never looked back, the songs in movies like Padosan, Aradhana, Kati patang, Apna Desh and many more was a blockbuster.

Pancham Da played a major role in making Rajesh Khanna a super star by his melodius, naughty, pop and modernized music.

How Rahul Dev Burman got the name Pancham

Rahul Dev Burman was musical since his birth, it was Ashok Kumar the famous bengali actor hailing from Khandawa who noted the musical note Pa when Rahul Dev BUrman was crying in his infancy. Pa being the 5th note of the musical syllable sa re ga ma pa. Ashok kumar instantly called him Pancham after hearing his cry and the name stuck with and throughout his life and even today he is known as Pancham or Pancham Da.

On Jan 4, 1994 Pancham Da took his last breath, but his musical gift will be remembered especially the loud cabaret Pia tu ab to aaja or melodius Sona re sona or sensual Roop tera mastana or emotional Chanda hai tu mera sooraj hai tu or all time favorites Mai shayar Badnaam.

Pancham da is no more with us but the name Pancham Da given by Ashok Kumar will never die as it has made an important place in all music lover's heart and all the musical stores will always be riched with Pancham da,s song collections.
