In the world of religion unless one is God incarnate his 5th birth centenary could never have been observed. And Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya is, indeed, God incarnate – the God of love, equality and fraternity.
It was the darkest period in the life of Bengal. Society was writhing under the curse of caste rigidities and tyranny of the rulers. It was for Mahaprabhu to save the nation from total collapse by his personality. Born in 1486 on ‘Doll Purnima’ in Nabadwip Sri Chaitanya turned out to be the first Satyagrahi in India by defying the order of the Kazi to stop Hari Sankirtan. His undaunted spirit inspired millions of Bengalese of the time to rise against injustice and torture. It was Sri Chaitamya in Bengal who for the first time broke down the barrier of caste and creed and embraced the Chandalas even as his brother. Did he bless not Yavan Haridas?
Through his preaching he had created an environ of spiritual consciousness. ”The Bhakti Movement” that followed culminated in “cultural renaissance” of India. Let the life and techings of Mahaprabhu steer the nation to its desired goal of establishing a casteless, classless society of equals.
