Muslim Festivals: Mohurrum, Idul-Fitr, Idul zoha in West Bengal

Muslim Festivals

The main festivals of Muslim Community that are celebrated in West Bengal are Mohurrum, Idul zoha, Idul-Fitr and Prophets Birthday.

Mohurrum - Origin of this festival :: At Karbala in Arabia, Martyrdom of the prophets grandson's, Hussein and Hassan in a battle. Sunni Muslims used to celebrate this festival by arranging a procession (like an War/Battle) in which they act mock fights and exhibits the prowess (Lathi & Sword play). They prepare Replicas of the Tombs of the slain idols (heroes) and later when the celebration comes to an end they immersed these Replicas in a specially designated Tank. Hindus can also take part in the procession. In the other hand, Shia section of Muslims also arranges a mourning procession by dressing Black wears and singing Marsia (specially composed Elegis).

Idul-Fitr- ends the whole month's fast (Ramzaan) and Idul-Fitr is like the festival 'Durga Puja' for Muslims. Every male of Muslim Community joins the Morning Prayer infront of a Mosque (in an Open Space, if Mosque isn't there) & everyone wear new Clothes. It is the day (Idul-Fitr) of merriment and feasting for religious discourses.

Iduzzoha- It is also known as Idul-Korbab or Bakr-Id, which is another popular festival of Muslims. Mythologically, it is related to Prophet Abraham of the Old Testament. Muslims used to make good recipes like Biriyani and Muttons; this is a part of this festival.
