Asiatic society of Bengal : Place to visit in Kolkata

The Asiatic Society was founded by William Jones in 1784 with Warren Hastings as its first Patron. It is a famous Centre of Indology with a rare collection of manuscripts. It publishes two journals – ‘The Asiatic Society of Bengal’ and ‘The Proceedings’

Located at the beginning of Park Street, off Jawahar Lal Nehru road, it has a reading room and a library with collection of over 1,50,000 books and 60,000 ancient manuscripts in Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and Hindi. The birth of Indian Museum took place in Asiatic Society in 1814, which grew large enough and was housed separately later. Temporary membership is given instantly to the books in the spacious reading room.

The museum was established in Asiatic society in 1814 by Dr. N. Wallich. The museum consists of ancient and valuable collection of Asokan rock edit, coins, copper plates, sculptures, manuscripts and archival records.
