St John's church, Kolkata

St. John's church, popularly known as Stone Church, is located at Council House Street south of BBD Bag. Designed by Lt. James Agg, its construction started in 1784 and was completed in 3 years, on land gifted by Raja Nabokrishna Deb. Its stone tower is 174 feet high. Amausoleum of Job Charnock was erected after his death in 1692, by his son-in-law, Sir Charles Ayre, within the church precincts. Besides Charnock's grave there are graves of his daughter and Admiral Watson, who was instrumental in Robert Clive's capture of Kolkata in 1757. Close to the western wall. a replica of Holwell Monument is kept which was shifted from the 'Black Hole' of Calcutta near the General Post Office. A famous painting of "The Last Supper' by John Zoffany, stained glass window and memorial tables of renowned citizens are the other attractions.

It is hardly 2 Km from Howrah Railway station and 2 Km from Sealdah station. By road you can hire taxi or can get buses from each and every place of Kolkata.
