Rani Rashmoni the founder of Dakshineswar Kali Temple

Rani Rashmoni, in Bengal she is popularly known because she founded the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple. She was very closely attached to the temple and Paramhansa Sri Ramakrishna whom she appointed as the Priest of Dakshineswar Temple.

Rani Rashmoni was born in very poor family of Harekrishna Das on 26th September in 1973 in North 24 Parganas Kona village. Her father was a farmer. At the age of eleven years old she was married to Zamindar, Babu Rajachandra Das of Janbazar, Kolkata. She was extremely beautiful and pious from her childhood. Spirituality was seen in her childhood days. After her husband Babu Rajachandra died she took charge of the business and proved her as a born leader who was not only a zamindar but also very kind to its people under her zamindari.

Clash with British:
Rani Rashmoni had several clashes with the ruling British India Govt. Once British Govt. imposed some taxes on fishermen for fishing in the Ganges River. Then she created a plot and blocked the shipping trade on a part of the river thus British were forced to withdraw the tax.

Once a Durga Puja celebration march was stopped by British. They alleged that this march is actually disturbing the peace created by the huge roar of Dhaak (Drum). But Rani Rashmoni did not care and defied the order. Then furious British imposed a penalty on her and later withdraw it fearing the riot may occur in her support by public.

Social Contribution:
Rani Rashmoni had done several construction works during her time for the people in the society. She made a road from Subarnarekha River to Pari for pilgrimage. Rani had also founded some popular Ghats in Kolkata and around. Such is Babughat which is named after her husband Babu Rajachandra which is also called as Rani Rashmoni Ghat. She also made Nimtala Ghat and Ahiritola Ghat for people's daily bathing. Rani also donated huge money to Presidency College and National Library and that shows her generosity and charitable character to the society.

The famous construction made by her was the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. She first saw a dream about Mother Kaali and that led her to found the temple. Gadadhar Chattopadhaya later Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa was appointed as the main priest of the temple. There Sri Ramakrishna had a sadhana for 12 long years and got Siddhi. Rani Rashmoni had close divine relationship with Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Many popular tales are there regarding the visit of Rani to the temple and some incidents happend in the Temple caused by Thaakur Sri Ramakrishna.

Rani Rashmoni died on 19th February in 1861. She was believed to be the first Indian to break the social barrier.
