Jagadhatri

Jagadhari Puja is a very popular festival in West Bengal. It is mainly observed in the regions of chandannagar, Krishnanagar, Hoogly and Nadia. In Kolkata after Durga and Kalipuja it is also a major event. This year Jagadhatri Puja celebrated in Bengal from 13th to 16th Nov 2010.

Mythology about Devi Jagadhatri


Jagadhatri is a form of Devi Durga. Jagadhatri is a symbol of 'Sattva' beside Durga and Kali, symbolized 'Rajas' and 'Tama' guna respectively. Devi Jagadhatri have three eyes and have four arms holding conch, chakra, bow and arrow respectively. Jagadhatri rides on a lion which stands on a elephant.

History of Jagadhatri Puja in Bengal


The history of Jagadharti Puja in Bengal is unknown even today. Some of the popular believes about the introduction of Jagadhatri Puja in Bengal are below:-
1.Some people of Bengal believes that Jagadhatri Puja was initiated by 'Sarada Mata'
2.Some believed that 'Indranarayan Chowdhury' introduced Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar.
3.It is also popularly believed that 'Maharaja Krishna Chandra' started Jagadhatri Puja at Nadia
4.In Howrah Jagadhatri Puja was celebrated at 'Moktar Bari' since 1713.

Famous places for Jagdhatri Puja are Chandannagar, Chapdani, Konnagar and Bhadreswar. There is a central body at chandannagar for Jagadhatri Puja celebration – 'Chandannagar Central Jagadhatri Puja Committee'. This committee helps approx 140 puja committee at chandannagar for organize there pujas. There are set of spectacular pandals. The Goddess worshiped with lightings and colors that transform the area with spirituality and beauty. The remnants of foods offered are distributed among people. There is also a beautiful immersion procession. People from far and near join and enjoy the festival.

How to reach chandannagar


Chandannagar is 37 km from Kolkata City and 40 km from Kolkata airport. Taxies and Buses are available from Kolkata. Howrah-Burdwan Local trains are available to approach chandannagar. You can also avail river service across river Hooghly (Ganga) from Kolkata and Belur to reach Chandannagar.
