Detail information of Poush Mela at Santiniketan: Festival of Bengal
Poush mela is one of the biggest festivals in Santiniketan, West Bengal. It is representing Bengal culture specially Bengali folk songs. People from different location of the world participated in this event. This 7 day fair attracts large number of foreign tourists.
History of poush mela at Santiniketan:
Santiniketan is a famous place in the Birbhum district at West Bengal. Poush Utsav ( Poush Fair : Festival of Poush). In 21st December 1891 (7th poush as per Bengali calendar ) Brahma Mandir was established at santiniketan, Birbhum district West Bengal. In the year 1894 a small fair was organized near the Brahma Mandir. The same fair is now known as Poush Mela in Bengal.
Description of Mela & other programs at Santiniketan:
Poush fair is started every year at 7th Poush as per the Bengali Calendar. This year Poush Mela will start on 23rd December 2010. A morning prayer is there at the Ashram in the morning. Then the students of Santiniketan present some superb performance by singing songs of Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore. There are some live performance of Bengali folk song specially Baul music. Each day different events are organized.
How to reach at Santiniketan Birbhum West Bengal during Poush Mela (Fair):
Regular Buses and trains are available to reach Santiniketan. Santiniketan is 211 km away from Kolkata airport. It will take 3 hrs approximately to reach Bolpur (which is 2 km away from Santiniketan) from Howrah station. Trains available are Howrah Bolpur Santiniketan Express , Kanchanjangha Express, viswavarati first passenger, Maa Tara express (from Sealdah). Regular Buses are available from Kolkata to Santiniketan via Panagarh, Burdwan, Durgapur route.
Some Tips for visiting Santiniketan during Poush Mela:
1.Book you Hotel room well in advance. Because find any place for night stay during the fair is difficult. There are only 85 lodges with accommodation for approx 1700 people.
2.Don't miss Baul music live performance in the fair. You will never get the same flavor anywhere in Bengal.
3.There are some fantastic handicraft item in the fair. You can purchase these at a low cost.
4.Don't miss the dance performance and tribal sports performance in the fair.
