New Market of Kolkata: Famous Sari Market
New market was known as Sir Stuart Hogg market cause it was set up by Britishers in 1874. It was a shopper's paradise which was located at Lindsay Street. After the Britishers it is also like the old but it is very beautiful , oldest and well known market of Kolkata. It is also called as the hub of Kolkata.
The Present name of Sir Stuart Hogg market is New market. This market is very famous for beautiful saris at low cost. You cannot imagine that how many sari shops are there. There are more than 2000 stalls in New market. The shopkeepers say price of sari's very high but the consumers bargain and get them in low prices. New buyers are advised to bargain in the market while buying items.
Not only sari but you can get all things in the market. Many types of cakes, fishes, fruits, chips, bags, shoes and many more things are available here for buying. When evening arises you can see the real beauty of New Market. You can see that shopkeepers sell cheep jewelery and eye catching bags which looks more attractive in lights. Now the whole Lindsay Street shopping area is famous as New market.
Best time to visit New market is evening hours but buyers are advised to beware of Crowds cause there are many pick pockets in this market and if they get chance they can steal your all money. So be careful to them.
Timing of New market of Kolkata
Generally shops are opened in the market from morning but most of the shops are opened at 10 am and closes in 8 pm, but in Saturday the market is opened from 10 am to 2 pm and Sunday this is closed.
How to reach New Market of Kolkata
New market is well connected with all streets of Kolkata. Nearest railway station from New market is Howrah and through Howrah is a busy station you come here from any part of west Bengal and vice verse. Nearest Metro railway station from New market is Esplanade so there is no problem regarding this. Nearest International Airport from New market is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
Thanks for posting such a nice article, but according to me New Market is not the best place to buy sarees, if you are in Kolkata. For buying sarees you can go to Gariahat in south kolkata or can go to College Street / Shyambazaar / HaathiBagan in North Kolkata.
