The place named Bowbazar , in bengali means market of wife. This area was given as gift to the wife of the Motilal family, one of the oldest aristocrat families of calcutta. Biswanath Motilal was the first settled here after relocating from Joynagar.

1. Raja Subodh Mullick lived here.
2. Sir Asutosh Mukherjee was born here.
3. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born and lived here.
4. Rishi Arobinda Ghosh lived here in Raja Subodh Mallick's Palace.
5. Sir C.V.Raman invented Raman Effect here in a house in B.B.Ganguly Street.
6. Nirmal Chandra used to stay here in his ancestral house at Nirmal Chandra Street.
7. First Tram in Kolkata ran from Sealdah to Dalhousie Square and Armenian Ghat.
8. Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar used to stay here when he came from Midnapore at Panchanantala area of Bowbazar.
9. Indian Association for the cultivation of Science, a national institution for higher learning whose primary purpose is to execute high quality fundamental research of the basic sciences, at 210 Bowbazar Street in July 1876.
10. Bengal National College started at 19/1 Bowbazar Street on 15 August 1906, with Aurobindo Ghosh as principal and Satish Chandra Mukherjee as honorary superintendent.
11. Banga Natyalay, at 25, Biswanath Motilal Lane, Bowbazar, from 1868 to1875. It was the first theatre to print admission cards in Bengali.
