Chandannagar Strand

Situated on the banks of the Ganges, this is a beautiful, well maintained tourist spot. It is beautifully decorated with lights, lush green trees, a huge number of seats for people to spend time and even well studded pavements. It is around 1km in length and 7m in width thus providing a huge place for children to play and roam about. It is also very popular among the local people who love to stroll along enjoying the mild breeze and watch the flowing waters of the Ganges and the faraway lights. The importance of the strand is increased because of its close proximity to all the main buildings of Chandannagar like the Chandannagar Museum, the Rabindra Bhavan, the Vivekananda Mandir, the court and the Chandannagar Church. This is supposed to be the most decorative river bank along its entire length of 2500 km.

Chandannagar Museum and Institute

This is one of the finest and oldest of all Museums of this entire region. It has a huge collection of various French items. It boasts of a beautiful collection of cannons used in Anglo – French war, wooden furniture of the 18th century, etc. These are rare items and are difficult to find anywhere else in the world. The institute still continues to give French lessons to students interested in the language.

Chandannagar Church

The Sacred Heart church stands tall as an example to the development of Architecture of those times. This is an excellent spot for tourists and historians. Though now it is named as the Chandannagar church but this was not the first church in Chandannagar. The original Church of Chandannagar has now become attached to the missionary school St. Joseph's Convent. It is now called the Chapel and is beautifully decorated. The dome of this chapel can be seen protruding above the high walls of the school.

The Underground House (Patal Bari)

This is another example of the advancement in the field of architecture and the aesthetic sense of the people in the earlier days. Its lowest floor remains submerged in the river Ganges. A number of freedom fighters along with Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and the noble laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore stayed in this house during their visit to Chandannagar.
