"Nihil Ultra" - "Nothing Beyond"
The school is named after St. Francis Xavier. The British writer Dennison Berwick refers to the school as the "Harrow on the Hooghly". In 2010, St Xavier's completed 150 years.
The Principal along with the other authorities of the St. Xavier's Collegiate School - established in 1860 in Kolkata, India by missionaries of the Society of Jesus - decided to initiate a student exchange programme with Shida Fuzhong High School in China's Yunan province.Well, this isn't the first time that the student exchange programme is going to take place. Before this, the Xavier's had initiated it with a school in the Irish capital, Dublin, which has been running for 15 years.
For this recent programme, 10 students of Xavier's have been selected for the China trip on May 19, 2011. Each of these students will spend 10 days with a Chinese family of a student at the Shida Fuzhong High School. In this way, the Xavier's students would get a feel of their way of life. And later, in September, 10 students from the Chinese school would come over to Calcutta and stay with the families of Xavier's students. The boys will attend the same classes as their hosts in school and would be taken to places of interest by the host's family.
Eligibility criteria for Student exchange program of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata with Shida Fuzhong High School, China
* Each has to score 50 percent in general proficiency.
* Without pressurizing the parents, each has to arrange sponsors for their own passage money.
The initiators of this programme didn't want only the rich students to make the trip or the students to pressurize their parents. Hence, they asked the students to fulfill the criteria of finding sponsors. They chose those students who they felt had the thirst to learn.
This isn't just a mere trip for them. They seem deeply involved in this programme as these students are taking lessons in Chinese language from the school of Chinese Language in Bally-gunge on Thursdays and Sundays in order to communicate well with their hosts. The Xavier's students are equally excited for a new and innovative experience of their life. They are eagerly waiting for the 19th May, when they would meet their hosts and surprise them with their Chinese language.
It is a great opportunity for them to experience a new culture - the Chinese culture. Through this programme, the students are expected to form a good relationship between them. A new culture is going to get inculcated in them soon.
Now that Bengal is getting exposed to the outer part of the world like China is something to be glad of. A school, standing on the land of Bengal, of such high dignity is worth describing and praising. No obstruction can now cease Bengal from progressing.
