Location of Chandannagar, West Bengal


Chandannagar is located in the Hooghly district. It is present on the bank of the river Ganges. Thus it is well connected by train and one can reach the place by train as well as through roads.

History of Chandannagar


Chandannagar has avery old history attached with it. It was established in the year 1673. At time the Nawab of Bengal was Ibrahim Khan. In the year 1950 three years after the independence Indian government was given control by the French. Then it was merged in West Bengal.

A number of tourist places are present in Chandannagar including:
1. Chandannagar Strand: It is a very beautiful place situated at the bank of river Ganges. It is about 1 km in length and 7 meters in width. It si surrounded by green trees from all the sides and has well decorated pavement. The place has been blessed by the nature with peace and beauty. You will definitely feel a lot relaxed after visiting the place. There is also Vivekananda Mandir which has a lot of religious sentiments of people associated with it.
2. Chandannagar Museum and Institute: This museum is one of the largest museums and has a collection of a number of antiques. You will definitely find a number of unique items here ranging from cannons which were used during the Anglo French war to unique wooden furnitures of old times. There is also an institute attached that teaches French.
3. Chandannagar Church: Chandannagar has something for people of all religions. The church is very old and has architecture of the French period. It is also one of the most visited places in Chandannagar.
4. The Underground House (Patal-Bari) : Another favorite destination for tourists is the Underground House. It is an example how knowledgeable people were at time regarding buildings and their architecture. It is believed that Rabindranath Tagore keep coming to this place often. He was impressed by this place and also said that this place caused increase in his intellectual power. He has even mentioned this place Patal-Bari in many of his novels.
5. Nandadulal Temple: Another place to vist in Chandannagar is the Nandadulal Temple. It was built in the year 1740 by Indranarayan Roychowdhury.

Festival of Chandannagar
Many festivals are celebrated in Chandannagar with full enthusiasm. One such festival is Jagadhatri Puja. The festival has been celebrated at this place for more than 50 years. A number of people form different parts of West Bengal come to visit this place to witness ornamental decoration of the Goddess with sola and the immersion procession of the Goddess.
