The Calcutta Public Library was built in the year in the year 1836 with which the National Library of India began. At that time the subscription for the proprietorship of this library was Rs 300 which was quite a significant amount at that time.
Books to that library came from individual donation and about a 4675 volume of books were donated from College of Fort William, Kolkata by Lord Metcalfe, the Governor General at that time. There were all kind of foreign books available in the Library. Many Indian and foreign books were purchased for the Library. There were donations received for the maintenance of the library as well as for purchasing books by the Government of India as well as other individuals.
This library was a unique library and such a well organized and efficient library was very rare and such library was not there even in Europe during the mid of the 19th century.
The National Library of India is under the Department of Culture, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India.
