Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling


Darjeeling is a awesome place of various tourist attractions. These includes many botanic and zoological parks. Out of them Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is the best tourist place for getting a superb moment with different types of birds and animals.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is basically a Zoological Park situated in the Darjeeling town under the Indian state of West Bengal. This Park is also called as Darjeeling Zoo.

The Zoological park was established on 14th August, 1958 at ana verage altitude of 7000 ft. from sea level. It is the largest high altitude Park in India. Department of Education of the state admistrates it for the study and conservation of Himalayan fauna. Mr. Dilip Kumar Dey was the founder of this Department.

During the period of Shrimati Padmaja Naidu , Governor of West Bengal of 1956-1967 Shrimati Indira Gandhi dedicated this Zoological Park to her. Shrimati Padmaja Naidu was the daughter of Legendry Nationalist leader, poet called 'Nightingale of India', Sarojini Naidu. Since 1975 then this Park was named Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park.

Covering an area of 44 hectares this Park consists of several endangered ainmals includes snow leopards, red pandas, gorals, Siberian tigers and a variety of endangered birds. This park became a registered society with an agreement that maintenance cost would be shared by the central and state government in January 1972.

Now Shri A K Jha, IFS is the current director of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park.
