Maulana Azad College Kolkata was established in the year 1926 by Lord Lytton the then Governor of Bengal and initially the college was named as Islamia College. The main aim of the college was to provide Islamic learning and education to muslims of Kolkata and Bengal. The majority of the students belongs to muslims of Kolkata but it also welcomes students from all communities. After Independence the college was renamed as Central Calcutta College in the year 1947.
