Lionel Messi, to step foot on Kolkata.

Lionel Messi, the star player of Argentina will be paying a visit to Kolkata on the 2nd of September at the Saltlake Stadium. Lionel Messi, born on the 24th of june 1987 is an association football player who plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team. This year he even won the Fifa Ballon d''Or Award. His playing styles has been compared to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi as his "successor".

In December 2008, the legend, Diego Maradona had set foot on Kolkata and now following in his steps comes another Legend Lionel Messi. One can be sure that this football-crazy city will welcome him with the same kind of excitement, love and warmth.

The Indian football Association says that if everything goes as per plan, it will be a double Bonanza of sorts for football lovers here, as Argentina may also play both Spain and Portugal in the one lakh capacity Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

An officer of a sports management company told the PTI, "We have signed an agreement for bringing the star- studded Argentina team to Kolkata". The IFA general secretary Utpal Ganguli said, "The Argentina team is scheduled to play an exhibition match either against Spain, Portugal on the 2nd of September."

There is a difference of opinion coming from the CMG (Celebrity Management Group). The CMG on Monday announced that Lionel Messi will be visiting Kolkata to play a friendly match against Venezuela at the saltlake stadium on the 2nd of September. The Argentina Football federation has also promised to bring its other star players like Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, for this friendly match.

"It is, perhaps, the first occasion that such a top level international friendly will be played in the country", said Subrato Dutta, the senior vice- president of AIFF, who was present when the announcement was made. He also said, "Though it would not directly help in the development of Indian Football, the event will definitely bring the country's name on the international map".

Another development follows this news. The West Bengal Sports Minister, Mr. Madan Mitra, said the government will renovate the saltlake stadium on this famous occasion.
