West Bengal name change reason
If you have any relation with West Bengal, be it your birth place or be it your travel destination for some work or holiday you might have experienced that the state name appears in the last position of any drop down list. In any national parade or in parliament the representative of West Bengal have to turn up as the last entry. So there are many reasons for which people of West Bengal wanted to change its name to one that is closer to the heritage of the state as well as closer to the top position in the alphabetical ladder.
So what should be the new name for West Bengal??
The State name West Bengal was given by British when a part of of Vanga was given to form Bangladesh and the western part with some other places was kept as West Bengal.
The common people, intellectuals of bengal, the political leaders of all parties, netizens all agreed on the issue of name change unanimously. The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is a game for this change as always she would readily agree for anything that do any good to Bengal and its people.
What is the new name for West Bengal
The freshest name for West Bengal is Paschimbanga. The new name Paschimbanga is a literal translation of the English name West Bengal. Mostly people are willy-nily accepting the new name Paschimbanga. Because if the name change is done by the government one should hardly expect it to change again.
Names people would prefer for West Bengal
Bengal, Vanga and Banga are some names that people across the globe would prefer for in place of West Bengal. Times of India has started a campaign to name the state as
WestBengal(only Bengal). Notes thinkers and historians have expressed their views for the name Bengal. Bengal would have been a better name because it expresses the spirit of Bengal, the heritage of the place, its language etc are reflected in this name.
Vanga too would have been a preferable choice. We have historical reference of this name in Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's song the National Anthem
"Punjuba Singdhu Gujarata Maratha
Dravida Uschala Vanga"
where Vanga refers to the West Bengal only.
Anyways, the state is now getting its new name as Paschimbanga, which sounds more parochial to many while some thinks that Paschimbanga is more regional. Many are finding it difficult to relate to this new name Paschimbanga for this very reason. For Urdu and Hindi speakers the new name Paschimbanga will be much difficult to pronounce they would like it in earlier name.
