About the famous Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt
Michael Madhusudan Dutt was a popular Bengali poet as well a superb dramatist of 19th century. Mr. Dutt was an excellence in Bengali drama. Personal profile of Michael Madhusudan Dutt
The famous poet and dradramatist of west Bengal Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born on 25 January 1824 to a Hindu family. He was born in Sagardari on the bank of Kopotakho River, a small village in Keshobpur Upozila, Jessore District of East Bengal. Later on he converted to Christianity and adopted the first name, Michael. Initially he aimed to be an Englishman in form and manner.
From his childhood he started his education from his neighbour village named Shekpura, and from that time he also went to learn Persian. From early Mr. Dutt was a briliant student. He was also desired to English education and Europian literature for which he tried at home in Kolkata. Mr. Dutt composed his early works as poet and dramatist entirely in English. Some of his Indian plays like Sormistha, Ratnavali and translations like Neel Durpan are the best. Madhusudan Dutt also wrote a poem namely Captive Ladie which was written on the mother of his close friend Sri Bhudev Mukhopadhyay. Dutt distinguished himself as a serious composer of Homeric and Dantesque, an entirely new genre of heroic poetry.
On February 9, 1843 Michael Madhusudan Dutt had embraced anity at the church of Fort William disobeying his parents and relatives. Dutt was very much inspired by an English Romantic poet namely Lord Byron. The life of both Dutta and Byron very much similiar in many respects.
Madhusudan married twice. On December 1855 he married to Rebecca Mactavys in Madras and they had 4 children. Later on 1856 after his father's death, Dutt came to Kolkata and married Henrietta Sophia White.
During the 1860s Dutt went to Versailles, France where he had inspired by one of his friend to cross the ocean in search of recognition. Madhusudan had almost cut off all links with his parents, relatives and at times among with his closest friends. After a long time Dutt had returned home only due to the generosity of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and for which Dutt was to regard Vidyasagar as Dayar Sagar which meant the ocean of kindness.
The famous tennis player Leander Paes is the son of his great granddaughter. Till the end of his life he remained with his second wife and one son and one daughter Napoleon and Sharmistha.
On 27 June 1873, three days after the death of Dutt's wife Henrietta Sophia White, Michael Madhusudan Dutt left his last breath in Kolkata general hospital. The superb dedication of Bengal Michael Madhududan Dutt left many romatic and beautifull poets for his friends in worldwide.
