Few words about Vivekananda College
Initially known as Barisha College, Vivekananda College was established in 1950 under the Dispersal Scheme of the State Government, affiliated to the University of Calcutta and accredited by NAAC. It started its functioning in the campus of Barisha High School and afterwards moved to its own premises in the year 1953. Vivekananda College was under the administration of the State Government and brought under the Refugee Education Scheme of the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Government of India in order to facilitate the student coming from outside India to study here. Due to the unavailability of accommodation the college was again shifted to Thakurpukur area. At that place it had built its building by receiving Capital Grants from the Rehabilitation Ministry, Government of India. The college fulfilled its objective in spreading education among the Bengalis. Due to the prosperity of Vivekananda College, the student strength is now more than three thousands with eighty seven teachers and fifty seven non-teaching staff. Vivekananda College hours are divided into morning shift and day shift.

Vivekananda College provides post graduate degree courses under are (a) Master of Science in Zoology, Environmental Science, Mathematics and History under Vidyasagar University in distance courses (b) Master of Commerce (c) Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development (d) Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism & Mass communication (e) Master of Arts in Social Work.

Vivekananda College provides common room facilities with arrangements of indoor games with magazines for reading. The college organizes several games and sports to inspire the students and encourages them to participate. The Students' Health Home provides regular health checkup and also provides medicines for any illness to the students. The Women's Cell tries to solve the problems of the female candidates and stands for the cause of women in the society. The Job Placement Cell helps to develop the students according to the requirements of the employment agencies.
